Cloth backed marbled boards, printed spine label, one of 400 copies printed at the Grabhorn Press. Nice copy. Harte served as western correspondent for the Springfield, Mass. newspaper and wrote of the climate, earthquakes, nitroglycerin explosion, politics, mining, accidents, state fair, etc. in a style that was "strongly Republican and markedly liberal on racial matters". This was two years before publication of his "Luck of Roaring Camp" which established his national reputation. Bookseller Inventory # 5491
