About this title

Synopsis:

First edition. Clean. Dust jacket slightly worn.

From Library Journal:

Written by a professional biographer, this account of Sartre's personal, professional, and political development is studded with carefully documented facts. Within the cultural and historical framework provided, the life itself is given a somewhat wooden interpretation; Hayman seems more agile when surveying Sartre's maturation as philosopher, from schoolboy to teacher to prisoner of war to lecturer and activist. And though Simone de Beauvoir's place in Sartre's life is informatively treated, other of his intellectual relationships are too briefly investigated. A more satisfying account of the hermeneutical import of Sartre's life and works should someday be forthcoming. Until then, as the first "definitive" work on Sartre's life, this book is for most humanities collections. Francisca Goldsmith, Golden Gate Univ. Lib., San Francisco
