About this title

After her second diagnosis of lymphoma at 57 years old, Joyce Wilson Hawley began the process of “writing to survive” in her own memoir. Digging deep into the hallows of a childhood haunted by domestic abuse and neglect, Joyce uses her sharp insight to dissect her memories for clues as to what shaped and created her, while employing her unique and quirky sense of humor to keep herself buoyant during the frightening experience. As a multi-talented and creative Southern woman, Joyce recounts her life’s journey from a low-income, Pentecostal mill family in Wilmington, NC, to the “little, big city” atmosphere of Raleigh, NC, where Joyce became a local legend as a nightclub/event singer for over 30 years. Joyce writes about many of the interesting people that she has encountered in her sixty-plus years as a Raleigh native, including oddly-charming family members, famous artists who delighted or demeaned her, hilarious and wise politicians, and everyday men and women. Joyce rubbed elbows with, rocked-and-rolled with, or just lived a day-to-day existence with all kinds of folks as she herself rode an emotional roller coaster of celebratory highs and gut-wrenching lows. At the end of her story, Joyce has done more than just survive her life and her illness: she has conquered them both to become a successful business owner, a close friend to many, and a passionate grandmother surrounded by a life filled with colorful friends, cherished family and creative energy to boot!

About the Author:

This is the first novel for Joyce Wilson Hawley, who currently lives in Raleigh, NC. Before writing her memoir, Joyce Hawley was a professional singer for over 30 years in the Raleigh/Triangle area of North Carolina. Her singing career began in the late 60's when she started as a favorite performer on WRAL-TV doing commercials and specials with Charlie Gaddy, as well as being an annual entertainer on the local broadcast of the United Cerebral Palsy Telethon. Joyce sang throughout NC primarily with her own band, Joyce Hawley and the Rhythm Section, and at times with many other well-known bands and musicians. Joyce performed at all of the popular supper clubs in Raleigh, including The Governor's Inn and The Velvet Cloak Inn, where she worked frequently for 20 years. She traveled regionally to entertain at country clubs, private parties, corporate affairs, weddings and other celebratory events. From 1988-1993, Joyce owned and managed her own supper club called “Joyce’s” Road in Raleigh, NC, where she also performed regularly with her band six nights a week . Her range of music has always included both classic and new covers of country, pop, rock, jazz blues, standards and show tunes. In 2000, Joyce took her lifelong talent as a artistic painter into the retail world, where she and her two daughters created a unique "funky home furnishings" store called "The Eclectic FURNITURE Garden." Joyce was the primary furniture painter there until 2008, and the Shop currently thrives with Joyce as it's main hostess. She shares her business and her life with her two daughters, Liz and Chrissy; their husbands Randy and Matt; and four handsome, rambunctious grandsons by the names of Barrett, Graham, Liam and Connor.
