About this Item

Scarce. A Unitarian Sunday School has placed a small round stamp on both inner covers. There are no other markings. Bound in the original greyish-green cloth with still bright gilt lettering on the cover and slightly faded gilt lettering on the spine. "Sayings And Doings" is in large gilt letters in an oval on the upper cover with the author's name in smaller gilt lettering "L.L.A. Very" beneath it. There is some lighter discoloration to the spine with a few small discolorations to the back cover. The covers are very well attached with no exterior cracking and with a small puncture to the back inner hinge. The covers and the spine have good, unworn and unbumped edges. On the title page, under the title is a four line poem: "The tiniest things have language; Tones to express their joy or pain. Then pass them not unheeding by - Lessons from them we oft may gain". Followed by: "By - Lydia L. A. Very - author of "Sylph", "A Strange Disclosure," Etc." - "Illustrations By The Author". The copyright page has the date of 1898 but there is no date on the title page. Lydia Very, 1823-1901, would have been 75 years of age when this book was published. 83 clean and crisp pages with a few faint finger impressions. The pages are well attached but there are several small cracks in the binding. There are 16 stories: The Princess Spring; Bob the Spider; The Lady Bugs' Party; Mrs. Turtle's School; The Two Old Beetles; Fairy Rings; The Orphan Kittens; The Three Squirrels; The Ambitious Toads; The Talking Doll; Old Winter and the Flowers; The Year and the Four Seasons; The Town Pump; The Little Seed; The Truant Grasshoppers; A Field of Weeds.
