Synopsis: This commemoration of the two hundredth anniversary of LaScala, an abbreviation in the Italian language for the official name Teatro alla Scala, considered the most famous lyric theater in the world, is a many-faceted celebration of the theater, not only as a historic building and the seat of centuries of great art and music and great performers, but also as a universally acclaimed cultural institution. Giorgio Lotti's unique photographic narrative includes sections of both the opera and the ballets performed at La Scala. The many beautiful full-color photographs illustrate performances of well-known operatic works, including "The Marriage of Figaro", "Carmen", "La Boheme", and "La Traviata", in addition to scenes from the ballet productions of "Swan Lake", "Romeo and Juliet", "The Nutcracker", and "Sleeping Beauty", among others. These photographs naturally include many of the great performers who have appeared at La Scala, such as Grace Bumbry, Luciano Pavarotti, Renata Tebaldi, Rudolph Nureyev, Carl Fracci, and Maurice Bejart. The book also features many breathtaking pictures of the interior and fašade of the theater itself, as well as rare photos of a wide variety of backstage activities. Raul Radice's text captures the magic that La Scala holds for those who grew up in its midst - those for whom the names of great performers and performances were a part of daily life. The book includes an introduction by Paolo Grassi and a reminiscence by Attilio Bertolucci. This beautiful illustrated volume is sure to please all lovers of great music who wish to acquire a permanent records of one of the world's greatest opera houses and the city in which it stands. Includes 353 illustrations, 135 in color.
