About this Item

First German edition, after editions in France and Venice earlier in the decade. 12mo. [20],288,[3] pp. In Latin. Contemporary vellum, contemporary manuscript title and later manuscript numerical inscriptions in spine. Contemporary inscriptions in title page and contemporary and later ink inscriptions in front endpapers. Vellum worn and mold-stained (particularly in rear board), rear endpapers torn, light dampstain affecting rear twenty leaves. Most contents clean. Good. The first edition published in German lands of an important description and defense of the Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel by French Jesuit scholar Théophile Raynaud (1583-1663). The history relates the intial vision associated with English Carmelite monk St. Simon Stock of the Virgin Mary (as Our Lady of Mount Carmel) and her gift of the brown scapular to the Carmelite Order and a promise of her protection to those who wear it. The Brown Scapular became an important part of Carmelite identity during the late 13th century and, by the end of the 16th century, had become a popular devotional garment among laity specially consecrated to the Virgin Mary. Very rare, with OCLC locating six copies no recent records of sales found. Bookseller Inventory # z07525
