Engraved title viggnette, 41 pages plus 5 pp. Index. Two engraved fold-out plates depicting natives , their huts, eating scene, piles of bones, ships in background, explorers in dress. The figures feature rather long legs and torsos. Contents tight, clean , paper is slightly age-toned but free of foxing. The contemporary paper brown, mottled wraps have wear down the spine, corners chipped. There is a 3" tear on front cover running from bottom edge up along the spine. Rear cover has diagonal crease.Adapted from the original version by the Portuguese chronicler Barros, narrates voyage (1505) of Pedro da Nhaya to create settlement on East African coast. A fort was erected, later attacked by Bantus acting under Arab instigation. Portugeuse might prevailed & soon captured control of all the former Arab sultanates on the east African coast.
