About this Item

This book was a gift from the author to the book's publisher's widow, Mrs. Edwin Ginn of Ginn and Co., whose husband had recently passed away. The author's note to Mrs. Ginn is pinned onto the frontpaper. "My dear Mrs. Ginn, / A dozen years ago I said to / Mr. Ginn: "I am writing a book on a / remote(?) subject and chiefly for scholars. / Would you like to publish it? Should(?) / cost not a little to make, and its / sale will be small, but I hope it / will be creditable to back the publisher and the / author". I remember his answer: "You / are a (?) this House and we shall / be honored to publish the book". / You will accept, I know, this copy, of / it I send you with this note, in memo- / -ry of a good man, very dear to both of us. / Believe me, Dear Mrs. Ginn, / Yours very faithfully, / John Williams White / Cambridge / March 2, 1915". The frontpaper is signed "M. Francesca G. Ginn", and there is a hole in the paper where the pin holding the card tore. The book is tightly bound with very well attached covers, with both the spine and the covers having very good, unworn and unbumped edges. Still bright gilt lettering on the spine. Faults: There is some roughness to the cloth on the lower covers from a waterstain, which also shows as a stain on the top of the outer text block. The waterstain has caused a slight discoloration to the margins of the pages, with a slight rippling. cxii, 378 otherwise clean, crisp, and tightly bound pages. Bookseller Inventory # 14249
