First edition. Octavo in original full calf, black leather spine label letterted in gilt. 538 pp. plus 7 full page diagrams at rear. Frontis double sided engraving to Part I of "Perspective of Schoolhouse, Out Buildings,a nd Grounds" with "Plan of The Grounds". Part II features full page engraving "Schoolhouse--Cost $400 to $500". Binding is well rubbed with splitting to both extreior higes but with boards still attached; chip to the foot of the spine. Scattered foxing throughout the text. The first part , "The School" deals with the schools "objects, relations, and uses. With a sketch of the education most needed in nthe United States, the present state of common schools, the best means of improving them, and the subsequent duties of parents, trustees, inspector, etc. ". The second part , "The Schoolmaster" describes that person's ".proper character, studies and methods for the government and instruction of common schools, and the nprinciples on which schoolhouses should be built, arranged, warmed and ventilated.".
