Synopsis: Book by
Review: There were typically two kinds of teachers in territorial Utah: single, cloistered women of the Presbyterian mission schools and Mormon polygamist wives. Neither had exceptional educational training, yet as they developed their own fledgling intellectual skills they proved themselves equal to their circumstances. Perhaps the restrictive environment just inclined them more toward liberal thinking. Maybe the primitive conditions (cedar bark and slate sometimes being substituted for paper) simply added to their determination. Maybe the community's ambivalence toward education heaped fuel on their passion. Whatever the case, these first-hand narratives demonstrate just how strong-willed, resourceful, and quietly subversive they were. A Schoolmarm All My Life is a welcome addition to a growing body of women's studies based on the American frontier experiences of women in all walks of life and circumstance facing common, primitive conditions. A Schoolmarm All My Life is highly recommended for women's studies, western history, and education history reading lists. -- Midwest Book Review
