Grade 3 Up Twenty family projects with scientific slants. About a half-dozen of these appeared last year on a calendar. This expansion shows parents and young people how to make a simple solar greenhouse, a kinetoscope, and bubbles; grow crystals; graft cacti; and construct a variety of homemade musical instruments. One idea from the book is to make a map of the U.S. (or any other country) as a pizza, using various toppings to mark geographical and political features. In general, the supplies needed can be found around the house or easily purchased. The procedures are carefully described, and the results are explained. Pen-and-ink drawings emphasize the idea that these are group activities; people of all ages are shown amidst a clutter of ingredients. Ruled pages at the back, suggested for notes, are inappropriate to a circulating book, but the main body of the book has no write-ins. Sure to inspire some scientific thinking.
