About this title

Synopsis:

This informative reference series is designed to help students understand the impact that science has had on the course of human history. Each set (the 18th and 20th century sets will come out in 2001 and 2002) focuses on a particular time period and consists of five topically arranged chapters covering life sciences, mathematics, medicine, physical sciences and technology. Chapters include a topic-specific chronology; a brief overview essay; 10-12 essays on the theories, inventions and major concepts discovered during the period; 10-12 biographies of pioneering scientists; lists of additional resources; and more. Additional features include approximately 60 black-and-white illustrations per volume, sidebars highlighting words to know and activity ideas, and general and subject indexes.

From Booklist:

Before there were six degrees of separation from Kevin Bacon, there was the Erdos number--1 for someone who cowrote a paper with popular mathematician Paul Erdos, 2 for someone who cowrote a paper with a mathematician who cowrote with Erdos. This is one fascinating fact students will learn when they use this encyclopedia. The set's purpose is to help students understand the impact that twentieth-century discoveries and inventions had on the course of human history.

Each volume begins with the same table of contents, chronology, and list of words to know. Volumes cover specific fields of science: volume 1, Life Science; volume 2, Mathematics and Medicine; volume 3, Physical Science and Technology. The format for each of the five topics is the same: "Chronology," "Overview," "Essays" on specific discoveries and inventions, "Biographies" (nine or ten two-page profiles), "Brief Biographies" (additional paragraph-length treatments), "Research and Activity Ideas," and a bibliography for more information. Sidebars are placed liberally throughout the volumes. They may be biographical sketches, glossaries for the topic, or further explanations of ideas mentioned in the essay. Most of the black-and-white illustrations are photographs of scientists.

Some of the topics covered in the essays are "Evolution and Creationism in the Public Schools"; "The Emergence of Women in Mathematics"; "The Development of Public Health Services"; "The Discovery, Importance, and Limitations of Antibiotics"; and "America Becomes the Automobile Nation." Some of the longer biographies cover Niels Bohr, Rachel Carson, Srinivasa Ramanujan, Florence Sabin, Carl Sagan, and Orville and Wilbur Wright.

Although there are many science resources for students at the middle-school level and up, this one offers a refreshing perspective. The Facts On File Encyclopedia of Science, Technology, and Society (1999) covers some similar ground but is designed for an older audience. The UXL set fits in perfectly with the curricula and should be on the A list for purchase by most school and public libraries. RBB
