About this title

Chronicles the lives and achievements of noted female scientists, including astronomer Jocelyn Bell Burnell, primatologist Dian Fossey, and anthropologist Margaret Mead

Excerpt. Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved.:

Taken from "Margaret Mead, American Anthropologist" Margaret's first field trip was to Samoa, a group of islands in the Pacific. She chose Samoa because it had not been touched by the modern world. Few outsiders had visited the islands. She arrived in 1925 and spent the next nine months studying the Samoan people's customs and traditions. Margaret lived with the villagers so that she could get to know how they thought and behaved. She found the teenage girls especially interesting. They seemed much happier than American teenagers and seldom quarreled with their parents. Margaret was so impressed that she wrote a book about them called Coming of Age in Samoa. It quickly became a bestseller.
