About this title

From Library Journal:

Here's a welcome second version of the Scribner Writers Series on CD-ROM. The search engine is brand new (it uses the Netscape web browser?included on the disc?as the interface), and it contains "biocritical essays" on 1,545 authors as compared to the first release's 510. You can do an In Depth search (by name, genre, sex, keywords, language, time period, ethnicity/nationality, or any combination), browse through Research Ideas (literary prizes, the Victorians, the American Romantic Period, etc.), consult a list of Writers A-Z (from Edward Abbey to Susan Zwinger), or look up an entry in the Prentice-Hall Handbook of Literary Terms, 7th ed. An in-depth search for Italian women writers quickly found one entry, for Natalia Ginzburg. Her birth/death dates were listed as "1916-191991" (a glitch to be fixed?), but we were impressed by the extent and quality of the entry, as well as the hotlinks to reference notes (a standard system feature). We were struck as well by omissions among Research Ideas (the choice of subjects seems rather limited) but content is otherwise good. One problem: we were inexplicably dumped out of the program three times. Bottom Line: Recommended for comprehensive reference collections serving serious students of literature.
