Book Description Charles Scribner's Sons, New York, New York, 1892. Book Condition: Good. First edition thus. An ex library copy with markings to the spine and endpapers. A single bound volume of six complete issues without original wraps are advertisements (anomoaly the front cover of the June issue has been bound in). Small quarto, 9 3/4" tall, vi + 768 pages, three-quarter leather over maroon cloth with gilt spine titles. Overall, a very good, clean, sturdy hard cover, exterior leather shelf worn and rubbed through at the corners, hinges and binding solid, paper clean and lightly yellowed, BUT there is damage to pgs 705 -707 and several pages finger marked in Library use. This is the publisher's edition printed from the original plates and includes all of the editorial material (articles, stories, poetry, etc.) of the separate issues BUT issues have been bound by the library, and lacks the advertisements and individual covers. It was the practice of the time for most of the better literary magazines to issue such editions before melting down the original printers' plates. Note: the earlier 'Scribner's Monthly' had been retitled 'The Century Magazine' in 1881, under new management. This 'Scribner's Magazine' began publication in January 1887 under the editorship of the legendary Edward L. Burlingame and set a new standard for older publications such as 'Harper's' and 'Atlantic,' publishing many more women writers, developing new illustrators, as well as authors, while fashioning a more 'modern' and accessible style of prose for the reader. Subject matters range from art, fiction, and poetry to history and science. As such it makes a terrific read as an anthology of its moment in time. Three-quarter leather over cloth. Book Description Scribner & Co., New York, New York, 1876. Book Condition: Very Good. First edition thus. A single volume of six complete issues bound without covers and advertisements. Small quarto,9 3/4" tall, iv + 912 pages, black and white illustrations throughout, 3/4 brown leather over black cloth. A very good, clean, sturdy volume overall; leather rubbed at all edges and fore-corner tips through to boards; binding solid, paper lightly yellowed. It was the common practice of the period for the publisher to reuse the metal in the original printer's plates from individual issues, printing complete volumes for special binding prior to reuse, for libraries and special subscription. These volumes contain all the original editorial content as it first appeared, but without the cover wapper and advertising pages and often represent the first book edition of the written works. This incarnation of "Scribner's Monthly' was sold and renamed 'The Century" in 1882. A new "Scribners monthly' was begun again in 1888. Three-quarter leather over cloth. Bookseller Inventory # 7275
