About this Item

376 pages, first edition, three thousandth, blind decorated orig boards. Evenly worn, rubbed at corners, t/b of spine. Gift book plate of Will Gould to Cabot library, a few small stamps to the ffep and fep, believe he bought it at a book sale, as there is a small, neat deaccession stamp on the verso of the title page from the NY Public Library. No other library marks, no pocket pulls, spine stamps or the like, otherwise, the book is very good, hinges are unsplit, clean pages, tight, square binding. Early copy of an odd book, supportive of slavery from a biblical and hestorical perspective. Biblical passages asserting a man's ownership of his wife and children are extended to allow ownership of other humans, a rather odd argument from a Vermont bishop in the middle of the Civil War.
