Book Description Princeton: Princeton University Press, 1985. Condition: Gut. XIII, 84 S. plus 296 Abb, auf Tafeln. Umschlag leicht berieben, sonst gutes Exemplar. - This is the second of five volumes that will provide a complete photographic record of Palenque, a city that reached sculptural and architectural heights never attained by any other Maya center. With hundreds of illustrations in each volume, including many color photographs as well as black-and-white photographs and drawings, Merle Greene Robertson's study will be the only complete record of the site as it was before recent damage by volcanic ash and acid rain. The work will document some of the finest painted sculptured figures and stucco sculpture in Mesoamerica and will be the first complete study of color in a Maya site. The second volume treats the Palace Houses, thought to have formed the ceremonial center of Palenque in the middle to late Early Classic period (from about a.d. 600 to 700). These buildings reflect the city's splendor in the period immediately preceding its rise from a local center to an important Maya metropolis. The author discusses the architecture and dates of the different structures, their stucco, frescoes, sculpture, glyphs, and motifs, using the new evidence to add to our knowledge of the site's history and rulers.
