About this Item

230 pages, suggestions for further readings, index. First Edition. Second state binding (glossy plasticized boards; first state binding was less than 100 copies). Signed by author on title page. In general, this is quite a biographically complex book to access. But according to Bob Maddox and Steve Messier, and the quite detailed article they wrote for Firsts Magazine, January 2010, Volume 20, Number 1, they determined, after extensively studying Carson's letters to and from her publisher, the following: 1) the true First has a two line copyright statement (which this book does); 2) no mention of H. Wolff below the copyright statement (which is also true for this book); 3) no statement of a later printing (also true for this book); 4) bound in extremely scarce and delicate flat paper over boards (of which only perhaps 100 were issued to reviewers - not this book) and the rest being bound in glossy paper over boards, which is what this book is bound in. Bright, clean, tight, and square text block, no marks of any kind, save author's signature and a single column newspaper article neatly pasted to recto of rear blank leaf, immediately after the index, page 230. Decorative endpapers. Corners sharp. Unclipped (no price) DJ in clear archival protector. DJ shows slight wear to top and bottom edges; two 1/4" x 1/4" chips missing from top of spine at the folds. Maddox and Messier describe the First Issue DJ appearing in several states. Long story short, this First Issue DJ is the third state First Issue DJ, identified by 1) 2 bars on the top of the front flap; 2) three reviews on the bottom of the front flap (the last one being Frank Dufresne); 3) the text on the rear panel ends with the words "coral reefs." 4) no known early version of the First Issue DJ has a price on the front flap; and 5) rear flap adverts for Iris books [note: not "IRIS" books]. Although I have graded this book as VG/VG, it is in reality a very nice collectible copy - hard to find in a signed First Edition. Shipped in a sturdy cardboard box for added protection. Size: 5-3/4" x 8-1/2". Bookseller Inventory # 002816
