About this Item

With Five Pictures by Jacquier, and an Introduction by John Beresford. London: (Nonesuch Press), 1927. Large octavo, bound in full marbled handmade cloth with leather spine label. 220 pages, composed in Monotype Baskerville with Old Face Open and Fournier ornaments for headpieces designed by Stanley Morison. Printed at the Kynoch Press on Dutch mouldmade paper. Limited to 1,500 copies. A fine copy. Dreyfus #47. The illustrations were printed by copperplates engraved by C. Sigrist after designs by Jacquier (Mrs. Ivy Skinner), which were then hand-colored through stencils at the Curwen Press. "The Seasons may be said to be the life-work of the poet: he devoted twenty years to its composition, alteration and expansion. Thomson's poetry (which is more famous than familiar) is remarkable in that it anticipates not only the interest in nature as subject-matter, but even the diction and metre of the poetry of the Romantic Revival. Professor Mackail has written: 'Twenty years before the date usually assigned for the origins of the romantic movement, sixty years before its full flower, we have its note here in the fullest, amplest, most authentic tone.'
