About this Item

N.d., circa 1998. Closed, 24.5 by 19 cm. 22 panels with artwork, stretching to close to 420 cm. Printed, but it would appear, unpublished, leporello reproducing a panoramic watercolor painting depicting the alleged sordid aspects of Catherine the Great's life, including, it would appear, the plotting against her husband and her sexual escapades, among them, her final equine moments. The episodic painting, though, is rife with ambiguity, and this is not clarified much by the cryptic captions which are deliberately written as if they were code or perhaps Urdu script. A close examination of these captions will allow one to discern an occasional English word. Still, we ourselves were unable to decode the captions to make much sense of them; this is a challenge we leave for the later collector. The panorama is highly Orientalist in its sensibility, as if it were the creation of a Mongol modernist. While we do not find the artwork beautiful, it has a dream-like quality, and it is most definitely arresting, perhaps disturbingly so. Light soiling. The Introduction by Robbe-Grillet, the well-known French novelist and notorious S and M practitioner, is not included. Bookseller Inventory # 004201

Shipping Terms:

The shipping cost provided automatically by ABE assumes that the item is the size of an average hardcover book. Since our stock is comprised largely of material which is bigger and heavier, we will often need to request additional shipping charges as a result. We pride ourselves on always packing safely, with the actual materials and method of packing depending on the item(s), where it is going, and with whom we are shipping. We most frequently use the post office, but on some high value items, or upon request, we may use alternatively UPS or FedEx. With the postal service, to domestic destinations with lower value items and the automatically furnished ABE shipping quote, we will usually use Media Mail; on higher value items we are partial to Priority or Express Mail. We will always seek to comply with a customer's wishes if they are communicated to us. When we seek additional shipping charges, we pass along those charges at our cost -- we do not add for handling or materials generally.
