Numerous illustrations are also included with the text. Bound in period decorative publisher's cloth. The front cover depicts a devil and a magician. Neatly re-backed / re-hung preserving the original spine. Some rubbing and discoloration to boards. Cloth board edges are carefully repaired. A well-read copy - pages contain periodic marginal staining and soiling. A newspaper clipping concerning bridal superstitions is pasted to the front free endpaper. A clipping of verse is pasted to the rear free end paper. A collection of plant and leaf clippings which were found in the book are preserved in a plastic sleeve. An interesting 19th century book of secrets and domestic occult practices. Sections are included on fortune telling, cartomancy, astrological lore, question and answer oracles, Napoleon's Book of Fate, secret writing, physiognomy, phrenology, dreams, lucky and unlucky days etc. A large chapter entitled "Omens, Signs, Charms, Spells, Incantations" contains a variety of spells such as those used to recover stolen property, ward off sickness and discover the identity of one's future spouse. Other chapters offer social advice including a "Book of Etiquette," and an "Art of Beautifying; or, Secrets of the Toilet."
