About this Item

[19th century]. 12mo. 158p. Including two astronomical illustrations with the text. Bound in original wraps (which are pasted to the inside front and rear blank leaves). The front wrap is worn and contains edge chipping; the rear wrap is only partially preserved. Spine is carefully restored. Edges are untrimmed. Pages are generally clean with occasional spotting or faint staining. A very scarce edition of the well-known book of secrets and magical formulae often referred to as "Le Petit Albert" after its pseudonymous author. (Note: this edition also evokes the name of Albertus Magnus or Albert le Grand). The collection was originally printed in the early 18th century. Different editions of "Le Petit Albert" often vary considerably in their content. This edition does not include the usual illustrations of talismans and pentacles. However, two astronomical / astrological woodcuts are present, one of which depicts the phases of the moon. The work is divided into two parts. Part 1 discusses love recipes, the mandrake or mandragore plant (Tromperie de la mandragore artificielle), the perfumes for the days of the week, the virtues of stones (Vertus des pierres) etc. Part 2 is dedicated to the secrets of various liquids, fruits, seeds, metals etc. (Secrets pour les liquids, les fruits et les semences, recettes approuvées pour manier plusieurs métaux). This section also contains a description of the famous "hand of glory," (pp. 147-49), a mummified human hand supposedly used at night by thieves as a talisman to enter houses undetected. (De la main de la gloire don’t se servent les scélérats voleurs, pour entrer dans les maisons de nuit sans empéchement).
