About this title

Many people believe that good leadership is a forgotten quality in the youth today. I believe that if we teach students to aspire to leadership they will be better people and students. Simply stated, good leaders tend to be good students. Therefore, if we provide students with a blueprint for how to embrace leadership in the classroom and community we have the formula for closing the achievement gap that continues to divide many students and communities. What many people do not realize is that you must provide Motivation, Openness, Vision, Exposure, Mastery and Engagement (M.O.V.E.M.E.) in order for students to want to assume leadership. In addition, leadership skills are nurtured through personal exploration, reflection, and maturation which can only come from overcoming obstacles in life. What students must realize is that being a leader requires that you prioritize, practice, prepare, and demonstrate persistence daily. Once students finish this Leadership Workbook they are guaranteed to view leadership through a different and more profound light. I strongly believe that once you feed the internal desires and thoughts of students that academic achievement will follow soon after. That is the essence of effective student leadership.

About the Author:

Student leadership is a driving force behind academic achievement at the K-12 and higher education level. Given my doctoral research and myriad experiences working with youth of all backgrounds, I assert that when students view themselves as leaders they tend to strive for personal and academic excellence. Over the past year, I have resided in Silver Spring, Maryland which has provided a wonderful backdrop for understanding the dynamics driving student leadership.
