About this Item

Spectacular, and scarce, color plate collection of Roman ruins as they appeared in the late eighteenth century. 62 hand-colored plates in all. Folio sized, large paper edition, measuring 40 by 34 cm, 15.5 by 13 inches. The pictures, both of familiar and less familiar ruins in and around Rome, capture the overgrowth through the cracks and faults of the ruins; the overall effect is to capture the bucolic , poetic beauty of these landmarks. Often a few people are milling about by the ruins to provide a sense of scale. When the ruin is located in a more urban area, one discerns how the living city of Rome was built integrating the ruins, and one has a great snapshot of Rome as it was then. Occasional light finger smudges in the margins. A corner dampstain on rear blank, with very minor bleeding into two or three leaves in front of it. Otherwise, plates and text are clean and might almost be considered pristine. Bookseller Inventory # 002602

Shipping Terms:

The shipping cost provided automatically by ABE assumes that the item is the size of an average hardcover book. Since our stock is comprised largely of material which is bigger and heavier, we will often need to request additional shipping charges as a result. We pride ourselves on always packing safely, with the actual materials and method of packing depending on the item(s), where it is going, and with whom we are shipping. We most frequently use the post office, but on some high value items, or upon request, we may use alternatively UPS or FedEx. With the postal service, to domestic destinations with lower value items and the automatically furnished ABE shipping quote, we will usually use Media Mail; on higher value items we are partial to Priority or Express Mail. We will always seek to comply with a customer's wishes if they are communicated to us. When we seek additional shipping charges, we pass along those charges at our cost -- we do not add for handling or materials generally.
