Synopsis:

Written in the context of the unstable political and ecclesiastical situation after Charles II’s Restoration in 1660, this autobiographical and historical work of the well-loved mystic and poet, Thomas Traherne, explores the vocation of minister through self-scrutiny and theological speculation. Considering how to reconcile these reflections with the difficult political choices required in tumultuous times, Traherne ponders his Diseas” of too much openness and proneness” while calling out many ministers for their ignorant zealotry, which he believed threatened the precarious unity of the national church. Revising the erratic punctuation but maintaining the quirky spellings, this new edition of the truly original spiritual exploration contains a wealth of insightful observations and wisdom.

About the Author:

Thomas Traherne was a minister and the author of The Ceremonial Law, Christian Ethicks, Commentaries of Heaven, Inducements to Retiredness, The Kingdom of God, Roman Forgeries, Seeds of Eternity, and A Sober View of Dr Twisse His Consideration. Julia Smith is the author of many articles on Thomas Traherne. She is responsible, with Laetitia Yeandle, for the discovery of several of Traherne's manuscripts.

Book Description Carcanet Press Ltd, United Kingdom, 2009. Paperback. Condition: New. Language: English . Brand New Book. Select Meditations is among the earliest works of the poet and mystic Thomas Traherne (1637-74). Written shortly after the Restoration of Charles II in 1660, the manuscript was not discovered until 1964 and first published by Carcanet in 1997. Traherne, a young clergyman in a country parish at the time, explores his relationship with God and his vocation to teach Immortal Souls the way to Heaven . It is a spiritual journey that involves examination of his doubts and failings (he confesses to too much proneness to Speak ), of the political issues that shaped his times, and of the realities of ministering to his congregation. Above all, though, Traherne s meditations celebrate the beauty of the world and the human community transfigured by the love of God, in terms that speak across time. Remember , he writes, that the world is the beginning of Gifts. Julia J. Smith s landmark edition, preserving the original spelling, provides a detailed introduction and notes on the text.
