About this Item

This book was inscribed to Karl S Betts of the Civil War Centennial Commission by the editors, Brandt and Shafter, each signing above his name on the title page. Civil War Centennial Commission is written in longhand on the fep. Betts died in 1962, so he was not able to see the Centennial through. This all occurred during the Civil Rights upheaval in the Sixties in the U.S., which made it even tougher on the Commission.
