FROM THE PUBLISHER - Cesare Pavese, now recognised as the greatest Italian writer of the first half of the twentieth century, was at the peak of his literary career when in 1950 he won the coveted Strega Prize for his novel AMONG WOMEN ONLY (Tra donne sole). A few weeks after receiving the award he was dead. In addition to his novels, poetry and short stories, his translations of English and American works, his critical reviews and his work as editor of the literary journal La Culture, Pavese wrote a large number of personal letters, sometimes several a day. This selection, the first to appear in English, covers the period 1924-50, from the time he was sixteen to the eve of his suicide. Of varying mood and tone, the letters give a valuable insight into his character and into the events and relationships that influenced his thought and development as a writer. Tenderness, self-mockery, acute depression, harsh criticism of some of his friends, the demands he made of his sister Maria when he was in prison—and in sharp contrast his carefree jocularity when writing to his American friend Antony Chiuminatto - are the threads of this self-portraiture. Above all it is the pervasive sense of sadness and isolation, apparent in some of his love-letters, that gives this collection its most haunting quality, in the light of the tragic climax. This volume is an essential companion-piece to Pavese's diary, This BUSINESS OF LIVING (11 mestiere di vivere), and also to his poetry, a collection of which, A MANIA FOR SOLITUDE, is published concurrently with these letters.
