In 1924 the American writer Conrad Aiken published the poems with British publisher Jonathan Cape. Aiken was educated at Harvard and graduated with T. S. Eliot, Van Wyck Brooks and E.E. Cummings. Aiken's framing of the poet in his Preface was without peer in its day and his insights and words are often repeated "she came to full consciousness at the very moment when American literature came to flower."
