239 pp. Small 12mo. Contemporary full calf with red label on spine lettered in gilt. Probably Second American Edition of these selections. Basil Hall (17881844), Captain in the Royal Navy and author, engaged in the Napoleonic wars, interviewed Napoleon, was part of Lord Amherst's embassy to China in 181617, made hydrographic observations in Asian waters on the return voyage and pendulum observations near South America (his father had been a geologist and chemist), visited North America in 18278. He was elected to the Royal Society in 1816, but he died insane in 1844. Hall's writings in description of his travels were very popular in England and America.
