Synopsis: Since the groundbreaking Alcoholics Anonymous was founded in 1935, people have discovered the benefits of sharing their experiences and exchanging support, while today medical and social-work professionals, the clergy and even employers are beginning to recommend self-help participation as a major factor in recovery.
The Self-Help Directory is the most comprehensive and detailed sourcebook of American and Canadian self-help groups published to date. Divided by areas of concern - such as medical problems, trauma survival, lifestyle problems and compulsive behavior - it provides nearly 500 A-to-Z listings of self-help groups, describing each organization's purpose, services, publications and guidelines for starting new chapters. Up-to-date telephone numbers and mailing addresses are also included. Unlike previous self-help directories, which often list only one organization per area of concern, The Self-Help Directory includes all pertinent groups, with enough specific information on each so that the reader may choose the group that best meets his or her needs, in such areas as divorce, AIDS/HIV, child support, blindness, elder care, deafness, child abuse, bereavement, drug abuse, survivors and victims services, eating disorders, phobias, leukemia, and obsessive-compulsive behavior.
A straightforward introduction explains the history and purpose of the self-help movement, and provides a substantive self-help bibliography. The Self-Help Directory also includes a thorough index cross-referenced by group and subject.
Exhaustive and up-to-date in its lists - and savvy in its advice for getting involved - The Self-Help Directory will be the resource that both professionals and laymen turn to for information about support for their everyday and special concerns.
From Booklist: This work, covering self-help groups and clearinghouses in both the U.S. and Canada, begins with an informative introduction to the concept of self-help. It gives a history of the movement followed by an explanation of the various types of self-help groups and a discussion of the social and economic factors contributing to their growth. For further reading, a lengthy bibliography concludes this portion of the directory.
The body of the work consists of a listing of self-help groups, arranged alphabetically by the issue addressed by each group. Issues include illnesses, adoption, aging, bereavement, interracial couples, gays and lesbians, and single parents. Each citation includes a description of the group, date of establishment, publications, name and address of a contact person, telephone and fax number, and a notation of whether it is a model (one of a kind) group as opposed to a national organization.
State clearinghouses that list local self-help groups are listed separately, arranged by state, followed by Canadian clearinghouses, arranged by province. The third section of the directory gives detailed information about starting a self-help group, the relationship between self-help groups and professional practitioners, the 12 Steps and 12 Traditions of Alcoholics Anonymous, and finally, the role of computers in self-help.
This easy-to-use book, filled with helpful and up-to date information, will be useful in public libraries. While most of the organizations are listed in the Encyclopedia of Associations, they are scattered throughout the set. Libraries looking for a less-expensive alternative should consider Self-Help Sourcebook: Finding and Forming Mutual Aid Self-Help Groups (4th ed., 1992, American Self-Help Clearinghouse, St. Clares-Riverside Medical Center, $9, 0-9634322-0-6).
