About this Item

With three separate half-titles. Later half-calf and marbled boards. First edition. Holmes delivered his oration on the evening of December 21, at the Church of Puritans in New York. The pamphlet exhibits some amusing date errors. On the half-title to Holmes' speech, the date should read December 21, instead of 22, with the same error found on the half-title for Pierpoint's poem. On page 79, it is stated that the dinner took place on Thursday, December 22 when in fact that date was a Saturday. Pierpoint (1785-1866) was a Yale-educated lawyer. Finding his practice unsatisfying, he studied theology at Harvard, and became a Unitarian pastor first in New York and then in Massachusetts, and at the age of 70 became an army chaplain.
