This unique work, that was assembled and bound by herpetologist Walter Necker, presents seven key monographs by Robert Mertens. The titles of the monographs follow: "Reptilien und Amphibien aus dem südlichen Inner-Afrika," "Herpetologische Ergebnisse einer Reise nach Kamerun," "Herpetologische Ergebnisse einer Reise nach der Insel Hispaniola," "Die Amphibien und Reptilien Europas," "Die Familie der Warane (Varanidae), Erster Teil: Allgemeines," "Die Familie der Warane (Varanidae), Zweiter Teil: Der Schädel," "Die Familie der Warane (Varanidae), Dritter Teil: Taxonomie." In addition to the four herpetological monographs on the central part of southern Africa, on Cameroon in western Africa, on the island of Hispaniola in the Caribbean, and on Europe, this work also contains the complete three-part series on the monitor lizards of the family Varanidae (including the Komodo dragon).
