About this Item

Together, Five Austen Novels in Four Volumes. The FIRST ONE-VOLUME EDITION, and the FIRST ILLUSTRATED EDITION [with a frontispiece illustration and a smaller vignette on the engraved title] of each book. This has also been called the First Collected Edition of Austen's works but it is more accurately the First Uniform Edition as each volume was individually issued, between December of 1832 and April of 1833, as part of Bentley's Standard Novel series, numbered 23, 27, 28, and 30 respectively. Only Emma, number 25 in the series is absent here to complete the canon. In October of 1833, Bentley reissued the novels, bound in green cloth with white labels, and sequentially renumbered one through five. Properly considered, this Later Issue would be the First Collected Edition. All four volumes offered here are FIRST PRINTINGS [with the general, engraved, and regular title-pages uniformly dated 1833], FIRST ISSUES [with plain white endpapers], and in Bentley's FIRST BINDING of plum cloth with black spine labels. The lower label of Mansfield Park is absent, and there's some chipping to the labels on Pride and Prejudice, with loss of only the final D in Standard on the lower label. There's some light bubbling to the cloth on Sense and Sensibility, and the ink signature of Jos Pratt in the top right corner of the front board. This is Colonel Joseph Pratt, master of Cabra Castle in Ireland. His signature, as Colonel, Jos, or Joseph Pratt, is present on the front pastedown and/or title-page of Sense and Sensibility and Northanger Abbey/Persuasion. The ink signature of his son and heir, Mervyn Pratt, dated 1863 [the year that Joseph died and Mervyn became master of the castle] is present in "Mansfield Park" and Pride and Prejudice. Additionally, Cabra Castle is written in ink on the front pastedown of each book, apparently in the elder Pratt's hand. As is always the case, the original plum cloth has faded to tan on the spines and some of the boards, but there is virtually NO WEAR to the cloth. Internally, there's some minor offsetting from some of the frontispieces else the books are in near fine condition, and are extremely scarce thus. Published in December of 1832, this is only the THIRD EDITION of Sense and Sensibility, following the first two British editions published by Egerton, and preceding the 1833 First American Edition. It is the SECOND BRITISH EDITION [and THIRD EDITION overall] of Northanger Abbey and Persausaion, preceded only by the 1818 First Edition, and the separate 1832 Carey and Lea Editions of the two titles. It is the FOURTH EDITION of Mansfield Park, preceded only by the 1814 First and 1816 Second Edition, and the American First Edition, published in 1832. And it is the FIFTH EDITION of Pride and Prejudice, published closely on the heels of the American First Edition of 1833, and preceded only by the First, Second, and Third British Editions, published by Egerton between 1814 and 1817. Michael Sadleir in "XIX Fiction" notes that these Austen titles are some of the rarest in the Bentley Standard Novel library and Austen bibliographer David Gilson says that copies in the orignal cloth are "uncommon, particularly so those in good condition." Here are four remarkable survivors, in exceptional matching condition. Gilson D1, D3, D4, D5. Bookseller Inventory # 000082
