[1768]" These volumes may be referenced in the ESTC citation # T14750 The two volume are bound in fine full period calf skin with red calf gilt title labels on spine, the set comes with 2 extra volumes, another copy of the volume one in full gilt calf extra and another third volume sequel, entitled Yorick, Continued Sentimental Journey, 1774, with a copper engraved frontispiece of Sterne.All Together 4 volumes. The Volumes are in Good Condition The volumes bound in full English calf, with the spine divided into six compartments by five raised bands with red morocco letter piece in the second compartment from the top, and speckled leaf edges on the second volume and gilt board edges on both. Externally the boards and spines are lightly scuffed, With some small chipping at the head of the spines, with the board corners bumped a bit, with the hinges showing wear but holding well. Internally the leaves are clean and well margined With some toning around the margins of the first and final leaves, with little stains or foxing throughout both volumes. Henry Tomkinson is a descendant of the lawyer James Tomkinson, who had purchased the Dorfold estate, near Acton, from Ralph Wilbraham. The Hall, which was built for Wilbraham, still stands as one of the finest Jacobean manors in England. Also present on the verso of each title is the library stamp of Dr. Hugh Selbourne, author of A Doctor's Life: The Diaries of Hugh Selbourne MD. these contains his observations upon his patients and upon the events of the day, published in 1989. Praised as 'one of the best modern diaries' by C.S.Handley in his Annotated Bibliography of Diaries Printed in English. Of a Sentimental Journey Laurence Sterne was the son of Roger Sterne, an ensign in a British regiment which was disbanded on the day of Laurence's birth. The first decade of Sterne's life was spent moving from place to place as his father was reassigned throughout Ireland. In 1724, his father took Sterne to Roger's wealthy brother, Richard, so that Sterne could attend Hipperholme Grammar School near Halifax; Sterne never saw his father again as Roger was ordered to Jamaica where he died of a fever in 1731. Sterne was admitted to a sizarship at Jesus College, Cambridge, in July 1733 at the age of 20. Sterne graduated with a degree of Bachelor of Arts in January 1737, before being ordained as a deacon in March 1737 and as a priest in August 1738. Shortly thereafter Sterne was awarded the vicarship living of Sutton-on-the-Forest in Yorkshire, before he returned to Cambridge in the summer of 1740 to be awarded his Master of Arts degree. By 1759, to support his dean in a church squabble, Sterne wrote A Political Romance (later called The History of a Good Warm Watch-Coat), a Swiftian satire of dignitaries of the spiritual courts. At the demands of embarrassed churchmen, the book was burned. Thus, Sterne lost his chances for clerical advancement but discovered his real talents; until the completion of this first work, "he hardly knew that he could write at all, much less with humour so as to make his reader laugh." Having discovered his talent, at the age of 46, he turned over his parishes to a curate, and dedicated himself to writing for the rest of his life.
