Synopsis: Fiction. On New York's Lower East Side, the 1960s are just beginning. SEPARATE PARTS (Six Memory Pieces) explores a world of committed, vibrant, and insistently independent artists and writers struggling for freedom from the social limitations of that time. Beginning with her own life and that of her husband, poet/painter Basil King, Martha King doesn't gloss over the personal and political contradictions of the era; the struggles she describes are both heroic and deeply flawed. She shows that even on this rebellious frontier, one doesn't have to look far to find the seeds of contempory corporate New York. Nevertheless, SEPARATE PARTS celebrates a world in which many people believed, often at desperate cost, in the power of art to transform the world.

About the Author: Martha King was born in Charlottesville, Virginia in 1937, attended Black Mountain College briefly as a teenager in the 1950s, and married Basil King in San Francisco in 1958. She began writing regularly in the early 1970s, after the birth of her two daughters, Mallory and Hetty.

Mrs. King edited the mini-magazine, Giants Play Well in the Drizzle, which she sent gratis to interested readers, from 1983-1993. She also briefly produced Northern Lights/International Poetry/Brooklyn Series and SpotS poetry chaplets. She worked in mainstream book publishing in the early 1970s, for nonprofit literary organizations, most notably Poets & Writers, in the late 1970s, and since that time as an editor and writer for voluntary health organizations. Mrs. King is currently Director of Publications for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.

Cover artist Basil King is a painter and poet who has just completed mixed media artworks, the Rimbaud Suites, for Illuminations, The Drunken Boat, and A Season in Hell. He lives and works in Brooklyn. His most recent books are Identity and Warp Spasm.
