About this Item

160 p.; 19 cm. Original dark brown cloth with gilt-stamped spine title "Letter" and gilt-stamped decoration on spine; blind-stamped decoration on both boards. Former owner's name on front fixed endpaper: Dr. J. Templeton. Bookplate on front fixed endpaper indicating that this volume was given to the Washington County Historical Society by Dr. Joseph Templeton in 1920. Small paper label on spine. Handwritten note added at lower edge of p. 160, presumably by the author: "A few errors in spelling punctuation escaped notice until the press had made some advance on the form." Internal evidence suggests that the author was James Morrow, who had earlier published A Series of Miscellaneous Letters from a Father to His Children, the first series in 1835 and the second in 1838. Morrow was the printer for some publications of Hanover College in South Hanover, Indiana, in the 1830s. In this book he discusses the history of the Presbyterian Church in Indiana and Ohio up to the middle of the 19th century, including in-fighting over slavery and temperance. A number of the reproduced letters were written by Morrow. Very scarce. In Very Good- Condition: loss at head of spine; corners are rubbed; fore-edges slightly soiled; otherwise, clean and tight.
