About this Item

Printed wraps. 40pp. With a 3 page appendix. A religious sermon reflecting on life and death, as well as eulogizing the lives of George and Elizabeth Cowles, who died on the sinking of the ship Home. Of note is the three page appendix with provides a short account of the wreck of the Home and of the last moments in the lives of the Cowles as seen by witnesses, as well as providing a list of passengers who died and who were saved. The steamship Home was a double paddled ship and at the time was considered one of the best involved in carrying passengers along the Atlantic. Caught on the edge of a small hurricane, it was hit by a large wave, causing the captain to intentionally ground it, where it broke up in more waves. It was one of the largest maritime disasters at the time, and inspired the Steamboat Act which required ships to have life preservers for each of their passengers (Hause: The Wreck of the Home, internet source). GOOD condition. Small stippled spots of soiling/staining to the front wrapper fore edge. Moderate darkening, minor soiling and staining to the wraps. Pen line to the front cover. Minor tearing and curling along the wrapper extremities. Rear wrapper torn along the lower hinge, with associated creasing. Interior solid with scattered foxing and minor staining, heavier to the title page. Sabin 58626. Bookseller Inventory # 006486
