Louisa Elisabeth McLaughlin (1836-1921) was one of the first women to serve as a nurse for the British Red Cross. Her and her colleague Emma Maria Pearson (1828-1893) were awarded medals by both the French and Germans for running ambulances during the Franco-Prussian war of 1870-71. "Service in Servia" is the authors' recollection of their mission in Servia at the outbreak of the Servo-Turkish war in 1876. Spine cocked and sunned. Binding rubbed along edges. Previous owner's stamp to half-title and title page. Offsetting and foxing to very first and very last pages. Minor and sporadic foxing throughout.
