About this Item

Sesshu is considered Japan's greatest artist, and is regarded with warmest affection. The Long Landscape Scroll, produced in its entirety in this small accordian-like book, is his well-celebrated masterpiece. Born near Okayama in 1420, Sesshu was concurrently an artist, a garden-designer, and a Zen priest. Such is the love of the Japanese for Sesshu, that a number of legends have grown up about him, the most illustrious being the myth of his youth: After a very trying day, his instructor tied the boy Sesshu to a Temple post. After a few hours of such restraint, Sesshu cried so bitterly (the story goes) that tears fell to his feet, and thereupon, with the tears as ink, he drew such a realistic picture of a rat in the dust, that the rat came to life, gnawed the ropes, and set the boy Sesshu free. Wonderful. The subject title herein is a small (3.25 x 5.5 inch) wood-covered scroll in near-perfect condition, and is a joy to hold, a delight to the eye, and to the spirit. A wonderful gift, and an essential item for your 'Japan library.' Size: 3.25x5.5. Bookseller Inventory # 001695
