Set of Two Books: Monthly Table of Wages and Hourly Table of Wages
Hourly Wages, 1886; Monthly Wages, 1893. Unpaginated. These two books are a poignant reminder of long-gone days, before the digital age, when most calculations were made by human beings using addition, multiplication, etc. These books are the 19th Century equivalents of a calculator or computer. They show the pay due a worker based on their monthly (or hourly) rate and the amount of time worked. The books have thumb tabs for wage (monthly, from $1 to $166 2/3, hourly 5 3/4 cents to 40 cents); then sums are shown for various lengths of time. Thus, if one works at 5 3/4 cents an hour for 50 hours, s/he earns $2.62. This set would a perfect gift for an accountant or would be an interesting artifact for display in an accounting firm's office. The Monthly Tables volume is 10" x 7 14", the Hourly Tables is 9 1/2" x 6 1/2". Both are black hard cover with gilt titles, with light wear at the extremities. Bookseller Inventory # 040816JS
