About this Item

blue cloth with gilt lettering; a trace of wear at bottom corner else fine ; dust jacket has some minor wear else very good plus; not sure if previous book dealer intended for the Christopher Hollis signature to be the basis of their "Autographed Copy" sticker on spine of book ( on protective mylar cover) as the Hollis' signature on the back side appears to be a facisimilie signature but the book does bear the initials of Al Rowse (Rouse)the well known British biographer who was known for adding his personalized notations to books. For instance, written on the actual book jacket cover is the following ( regarding Hollis):"At All ages always pleased with himself - ALR " other interesting notations in pencil within the book: The following is from Wikpedia :One of Rowse's great enthusiasms was collecting books, and he owned many first editions, many of them bearing his acerbic annotations. For example, his copy of the January 1924 edition of The Adelphi magazine edited by John Middleton Murry bears a pencilled note after Murry's poem In Memory of Katherine Mansfield: 'Sentimental gush on the part of JMM. And a bad poem. A.L.R.' Upon his death in 1997 he bequeathed his book collection to the University of Exeter, and his personal archive of manuscripts, diaries, and correspondence. In 1998 the University Librarian selected about sixty books from Rowse’s own working library and a complete set of his published books. The Royal Institution of Cornwall selected some of the remaining books, and the rest were sold to dealers. Bookseller Inventory # tsa032008

Store Description

Rare Reads formerly operated a storefront in The Lakewood Antiques Gallery in Atlanta, Georgia but reverted to a strictly online operation when the Gallery closed. In 2006, Rare Reads published "The Heeey Baby Days of Beach Music" which received a bronze medal from The Independent Publishers Association. Long sold out, copies of the 13 pound tribute to the musicians who created the unique R&B genre are occasionally available on ABE. The book was a collaborative effort of Rare Reads and many others including the musicians that created the sound Southerns term "Beach Music." Rare Reads is considering future publications in addition to expanding its online enterprise. Rare Reads is operated by Greg Haynes and son Reid Haynes and has warehouses in Atlanta and Athens, Georgia.
