About this Item

First Trade Edition, Limited Issue of one of the indisputable classics of twentieth century English literature, which assured Lawrence's place in history as "Lawrence of Arabia." Thick, square 8vo: 672pp, portrait frontispiece, 53 plates (some colored) by Kennington, Rothenstein, Roberts and others, 6 text illustrations, 3 facsimiles, and 4 folding maps. Publisher's original deep tan buckram, pigskin spine stamped in gilt; top edge stained brown, others uncut; gilt-stamped motto on upper board: "The sword also means clean-ness & death." Without the card slipcase. An excellent copy, top grain rubbed at spine ends, light fading and occasional spotting to cloth, otherwise virtually pristine and apparently unread (many pages unopened). O'Brien A40. National Geographic 100, 24. Third [i.e. second complete] edition, preceded by the incomplete "Oxford Times Edition of 1922 (eight copies only were printed) and the rare privately printed "Subscriber's Edition" of 1927 (limited to 211 copies, with only 170 copies complete), the first publicly available edition. "Seven Pillars, for all its unevenness of interest and quality, and its frequent straining for effect, is a great and memorable work [Churchill ranked it with 'the greatest books ever written in the English language.'] . . . Novelistic in many ways, in its creation of character most obviously, and in its imaginative qualities, [it] often tread[s] a fine line between purple prose and hauntingly luminous description, between accounts of monotonous camel rides or Bedouin encampments and passages of great spirituality and insight . . . That Seven Pillars is no straightforward historical or military record is clear (though its skilful and knowledgeable assimilation of historical, military and diplomatic background is equally so). Subsequent researches have shown it to be likely that Lawrence embellished the story in places to give his own part and prowess greater prominence. But . . . there is no doubt that his achievements as a military commander were remarkable . . .
