About this Item

DOMENECH, Emmanuel H. Seven Years' Residence in the Great Desert of North America. London; Longman, Green, Longman, and Roberts, 1860. 1st ed. 2 Vols. xxiv,445;xii,465pp. Colored frontis., colored lithographic plates, colored folding map. Later 3/4 black morocco, raised spine bands, compartments gilt, T.e.g. Private owner's blindstamp on title page of Volume One, a very small amount of faint scattered foxing, else very good or better. HOWES D-410, "aa." Wagner-Camp 356:1. Wheat Transmississippi 1008. Graaf 1121. Pilling 1061. Abbey 664. Clark III:33305. Sabin 20554. Although Domenech visited the Southwest, he has never been granted much credence as an observer. The plates and maps are largely lifted from other sources, and the author has been criticized for his inaccuracy as an ethnologist. Still, this is an interesting narrative of travels, including much material on the Indians of the region. Wheat finds this map of interest for its marking of the Oregon Trail.
