About this Item

Original linen-backed blue boards, spine label, minor spotting to spine, boards and all of interior exquisite. An excellent uncut and partially unopened copy. First edition thus, being an expanded version of Davis' earlier Sixty years in California (San Francisco, 1889). The printing of this edition is quite interesting, as many of the copies contain not only facsimiles of related material but original documents as well. A total of 2250 copies were printed. Of these, 250 were printed on special paper and included an extra table of contents listing additional material which came with the book. Copies numbered 151 to 250 were called the "Argonaut edition" ; the "Author's section of Argonaut edition" comprised copies 101 to 150; the "El Dorado" edition were those numbered 46 to 100: the "Pioneer" edition were copies 26 to 45: "California collectors" were copies 4 to 25; and finally there was an Editorial copy, a Publisher's copy and the Presidential copy destined for Herbert Hoover.Ours is No. 68 of the 55 copies of the El Dorado edition. It is signed by both the editor and publisher. Additional material includes, among others, a page of the author's manuscript, the Mayor's proclamation of April 18, 1906, the day of the San Francisco earthquake, a letter agreement dated January 17, 1851, for the sale of 900 American milch cows (one of the most important legal documents known), a cancelled stock certificate of the famous "Yellow Jacket Silver Mining Company" from 1888, and other wonderful maps, magazine leaves, pamphlets, songsheets, and related material.A wonderful, complete copy of this fascinating and entertaining work on early California.
