About this Item

First edition. Green cloth with spine lettering gilt; 181 pps. The scarce first edition of this controversial work concerning the effects of higher education on women. The sub-title is somewhat misleading as the author argues that an advanced education is a detriment to women, adversely affecting their societal role and status as well as their reproductive abilities. One of the pieces of Victorian reasoning put forth is that young girls' systems are unable to handle the simultaneous growth of thier ovaries and their brains. He states in one example, "They (the women in question) graduated from school or college excellent scholars, but with undeveloped ovaries. Later they were married, and were sterile." A tight copy with gilt spine lettering still bright; very slight rubbing to the extremities and a bit of minor spotting to the front cloth. Bookseller Inventory # D8572
