Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. 352 Pages with a frontispiece illustration. Former owners name inked on ffep, with Xmas 1906 date. Page 13/14 loose from binding (included). Contents otherwise tight and clean. An early crime mystery novel by Thomas W. Hanshew 1857 - 1914 the American actor and later English writer, born in Brooklyn, New York. In America at 16 years old he played minor parts with Ellen Terry's company and later played important roles with Clara Morris and Adelaide Neilson. Later he moved to London and was associated with Ward Lock's publishing house. He used, among others, the pen name "Charlotte May Kingsley," and wrote more than 150 novels. This is one of his scarce crime mysteries which was published before his best-known creation, the consulting detective Hamilton Cleek. A tale set mainly in the Grub Street area of London involving numerous local characters with their dialect, a young girl an heiress the daughter of a gipsy and a member of the Aristocracy, and of course a classic hero.
