About this title

In the few months before Jakob Muller’s thirteenth birthday, his father was condemned to the slave galleys, his mother died in prison , and his younger siblings were being divided among the more law-abiding Swiss in order that they might be raised with "proper" thoughts. Fearing that Jakob’s life was in danger, friends arranged that the boy be taken far away from the community in which he was raised to someplace safer: Germany. Philip Faverges, a young clockmaker, just happened to be on his way to the Frankfurt Fair; he became Jakob’s means of escape, his guide, his teacher, his hope for the future. Removing Jokob from Switzerland, however, did not remove him from persecution; for he was shadowed by a man named Grun, who, like Goethe’s Mephistopheles, was the spirit that endlessly denies.

This is a story of a young boy caught in the turmoil of the late Seventeenth Century and of the opposing forces drawing him into the Shadow of Eternity.
