About this Item

Nine small paperbound books of Shakespeares plays used by "The Dixon, Illinois Shakespeare Club" in the 1880's. Owner of the copy plus the year is written at the top of each. This group studied Shakespeare's plays & occasionally put on public performances. The copies include - "The Two Gentlemen of Verona" - 1883 - Very Good condition - Cover intact with a little soil & bent corner on back cover - book otherwise clean & tight. "The Merry Wives of Windsor" - 1884 - Very good condition - Paper cover intact - spine worn & soiled - otherwise clean & tight. "King Lear" - 1882 - Fair condition - blue front cover has tears and is worn - back cover & spine cover gone - book sewn to stabilize - couple of pages bent - parts underlined. "Merchant of Venice' - 1884 - condition good - stains on front & back covers - wear to spine & edges - pencil marks on couple of pages - otherwise clean & tight. "As You Like It" - 1884 - Condition good - pencil marks and small stain on pink front cover with bottom edge wear; ink (E) on back cover - inside copy appears clean with a few previously bent corners. "Richard III" - 1882 - Condition fair to good - blue cover has stain on front & small one on back & nick out of bottom of front cover - 1/4 of spine paper gone - interior of book clean & tight. "The famous History of the life of King Henry VIII" - 1883 - Condition fair to good - greenish gray cover soiled at spine edge with wear at all edges; paper at spine mostly missing - back corner cover bent and few stains - many pages bent at bottom spine - book intact & tight. "All's Well That Ends Well" - 1882 - Condition good - front blue cover soiled with little wear to edges & small tear in paper at spine; interior of book clean & tight. "The Winter's Tale" - 1883 - Condition good - stain on front & back cover - nick & tear at lower spine cover - interior of book clean & tight. All pages in all books tanning.
