About this title

Synopsis:

The average Renaissance Englishman knew a language of symbolic images - an iconography - and could recognize such iconic images whether he encountered them in graphic fo9rm, in literature, or on the stage. Because modern readers and viewers of Shakespeare's plays are not familar with Renaissance iconography, they often miss dimensions of meaning in the plays that would have been apparent to a Renaissance audience. This study, focusing on "As You Like It, The Merchant of Venice, Richard II, Hamlet, Macbeth, and The Tempest, with aqn appendix on Othello, is one of the first to examine Shakespeare's stagecraft in the light of iconic stage imagery.
