About this Item

An interesting little tome of Shakespeare, with only parts of the red leather spine and gold titles remaining. Covers are gone missing, book is as found. Dispite lacking covers the book's free end papers and pages are amazingly in great shape. There is a penciled-price on the ffp upper corner and it has a little fray, but the rest of the book is very nice. There is a pre-title page with some illustrations, then on the back of the pre-title page is both permission from Messrs Macmillan & Co, that the text used is the "Cambridge" edition and a printing history, where it states that this is the ninth / 9th edition, November 1902. There is a beautiful etching, embossed I might add, of Shakespeare's Cliff, which I contemplated tearing out of the book, framing and selling in my shop. but alas. I didn't. Instead, I know people love the literature of old Shakey and thought that some fan would love this little volume. Across from this frontice etching is an aphorisms by Richard Wilton. Then comes a very decoratively illustrated title page, that reads Shakespeare's Tragedy of King Lear with Preface, Glossary By Israel Gollancz M. A.; London : Published By J. M. Dent and Co : Aldine House W. C. : MCMII / [1902 Edition]. On the back of the title page is a sort of foreword by Charles Lamb. Then begins the preface which is footnoted. The books text is nicely printed in black ink, and subtitles are printed in red. This small tome is comprised of about 200 pages total, but the last page number is 188. I think the small etching is worth the-price-of this book, the book will eventually need to be rebound, and when it is you'll have a lovely special little edition of King Lear. The book today is 102 years old. Sold as is, however any Shakes fan would enjoy it. Size: S: Some Edge Wear, Normal for Age of Book. Bookseller Inventory # 5009423
